The world’s most iconic archaeologist adventurer is getting a makeover! Sophie Turner, known for her roles in Game of Thrones and the X-Men franchise, is reportedly stepping into Lara Croft’s boots in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s highly anticipated Amazon series based on the Tomb Raider gaming franchise. Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting collaboration, brimming with Latest movie news, Fantasy adventure, and Upcoming film releases buzz.
Lara Croft Levels Up on Amazon
Hold onto your treasure maps, folks—Sophie Turner is in talks to star as Lara Croft in Amazon’s live-action adaptation of the Tomb Raider series. According to Deadline, Turner is leading the race after competing against Lucy Boynton (of Bohemian Rhapsody fame) for the role.
This new TV series is part of a major effort by Amazon to reimagine the beloved Gaming franchise. With Phoebe Waller-Bridge at the helm, it’s clear that this isn’t going to be your average action-adventure show. Waller-Bridge, who created the Award-winning Comedy Fleabag, will serve as the show’s writer and executive producer, promising to inject her signature wit and edge into the project.
Amazon’s Big Gamble on Tomb Raider
Amazon is betting big on this Streaming service hit, making it one of their top priorities. The deal with Waller-Bridge, rumored to be worth $20 million annually, underscores just how much faith the platform has in her vision.
Jennifer Salke, Amazon Studios’ head honcho, said last month, “Phoebe grew up playing Lara Croft/Tomb Raider and is obsessed with the character. The fact that she’s bringing this franchise to life feels like a huge win for us.”
Waller-Bridge herself teased her approach to the project in a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair: “What if I could take the reins on an action franchise, with everything I’ve learned, with a character I adore, and also just bring back some of that 90s vibe?” Translation: Expect Action-packed thrills, a dash of Comedy, and plenty of Mystery & Thriller vibes.
Lara Croft’s Legacy Gets a Fresh Start
The role of Lara Croft has been famously portrayed by Actresses like Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s and Alicia Vikander in a 2018 reboot. Hayley Atwell also lent her voice to the character in a recent Animated Netflix series.
Sophie Turner’s transition into this iconic role is the perfect next step after her time as Sansa Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones and as Jean Grey in the Superhero X-Men Movies. She’s no stranger to action, intrigue, or wielding power—basically, Lara Croft’s entire résumé.
What’s Next for Sophie Turner?
Turner has been keeping busy. She recently starred in the crime Drama The Staircase, the Fact-based ITV series Joan, and will next appear in the heist thriller Haven. Adding Tomb Raider to her growing list of Top-rated TV series and Films cements her status as a versatile and in-demand Actress.
Why This Tomb Raider Is Different
Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s involvement guarantees that this won’t just be another Superhero-esque adventure series. Her work on Fleabag, No Time to Die, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny proves she knows how to balance Drama, humor, and heart-pounding Action.
She’s also aiming to do “something dangerous and exciting” with the project, likely giving the show a fresh, feminist edge while retaining the 90s nostalgia that fans love.
